The purest of mountain air

The buchu in Kaapse Buchu Gin comes from Tierhoek (www.tierhoek.com) – the only restored sandveld wine farm in Africa. Located in the Piekenierskloof region in the Western Cape, it is one of the few areas of the Cederberg mountains where buchu occurs naturally. At over 700m above sea level, on a south-facing slope, it breathes the purest of mountain air. Here it is handpicked and immediately infused with the local gin, ensuring all the buchu oils are extracted naturally and at their finest. Buchu has a long and interesting history as a medicinal herb in South Africa’s western cape area. Used by the indigenous Khoisan people for centuries, they believe buchu is an elixir of youth and also use it as a general tonic to promote well being. Today it is a protected plant and part of the renowned Cape Floral Kingdom.

Natural antibiotic

Buchu’s medicinal properties are found in the oils extracted from its leaves. Used in the preparation of herbal remedies, they possess strong diuretic, antiseptic, antibacterial, anti-fungal and antispasmodic properties, enabling buchu to act as a natural antibiotic. Buchu also acts as a stomach tonic, a cleansing herb and an anti-inflammatory, treating gout, rheumatism and other symptoms of overindulgence. Buchu oils are a valuable source of vitamins A, B, C and E as well as of numerous minerals, antioxidants and disease-preventing flavonoids.

Magical chemistry

Serve with ice, tonic, lemon or any of your other favourite gin mixers. Our preference is to mix with sparkling or soda water, keeping it healthy and natural! But here is a well-kept secret – serve with a touch of tonic, plenty of ice and a slice of apple! (Yes, believe it or not, there’s a magical chemistry between apple, buchu and our gin!) A sprig of buchu is left in the bottle for ongoing infusion and sexy visual appeal! Not many people have the kind of access to buchu we do, and can be so generous with this fabulous herb! You’re either going to love our buchu-infused gin or not! The flavour is herbaceous with strong eucalyptus and distinctive fynbos aromas. However, in this deliciously smooth gin these tones are subtly portrayed. Go on … try it for yourself! Cocktail options
